MozMill 1.0RC2 w/ Test Recorder | Traceback

Foxiewire feed - Sun, 11/30/2008 - 12:10

MozMill 1.0RC2 w/ Test Recorder

Last week we finished up the 1.0RC2 release of MozMill.

The biggest new feature was is the Test Recorder. You can now hit the Record button and use the Application normally and create a test outline. I say “test outline” because it’s usually necessary after creating a recorded test to go in and fill it up with a few conditional wait calls, like waitForElement and waitForPageLoad. If you don’t the test runs too fast and ends up failing pretty quickly. We’re working on some future code to pick up things like new page loads so that we can add those waits in a recorded test but for now you’ll have to do them by hand.

We also have significantly improved some of the documentation.

For years, the Mozilla goal was simple

Foxiewire feed - Fri, 11/28/2008 - 15:18

promote choice and innovation on the Internet and the biggest lever we had to achieve this was Firefox. In 2003, there was a monopoly (which leads to lack of choice) and total lack of innovation (why would Microsoft invest in something that did not generate revenue and could threaten its business?). Making a modern, safer, easier to use, cross-platform and extensible browser made sense.

Fast forward 5 years or so. We're in a totally different place. The browser market is in much better shape than before. 2009 seems very promising with Safari 4, Chrome 1.0, IE8 and Firefox 3.1. There is absolutely no doubt that keeping on improving Firefox is the right thing to do, but in this new era, the old Mozilla goal sounds less relevant. Mozilla's momentum is bigger than ever

Another fantastic Support Firefox Day completed - SUMO Blog

Foxiewire feed - Fri, 11/28/2008 - 13:18

One week after our fourth Support Firefox Day (SFD for short), it’s time for reflection! This time around, Cheng was doing most of the work of pulling it all together, as well as hosting a fair share of the individual sessions throughout the day. That said, it was very much a display of great team work where everyone from the SUMO team was involved to ensure that the day would become a success.

Mozilla Blog Firefox 3.1 Beta 2: Time to start updating add-ons

Foxiewire feed - Thu, 11/27/2008 - 17:14

Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 is coming. This beta will be add-on compatibility frozen. That means it’s safe to update your add-ons.

Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 will likely be released the first week of December. With Beta 2 we’re making the promise that we won’t be changing interfaces that break add-ons so now is the time to start updating. We have added a Beta 3 to our schedule. With Beta 3 we will start aggressively pushing Firefox out into users’ hands, so it’s important that in between Beta 2 and Beta 3 that your add-ons are updated, otherwise we will have problems getting users to update.
What to update?

KidZui Addon

Foxiewire feed - Thu, 11/27/2008 - 14:01

Are young children well represented online? Well, if you judge only by the sheer number of sites directed at them, the answer would certainly be in the affirmative. But there is more to the online experience, and interaction and engagement as well as just consuming content are all important. And all that content can be overwhelming. As a parent myself, I spent ages online helping my daughter find a decent experience.

TooManyTabs Manages Firefox Tabs, Frees Up Memory

Foxiewire feed - Thu, 11/27/2008 - 10:24

TooManyTabs organizes extra browser tabs in Firefox, allowing you to store over 50 extra tabs in a special row for quick access at a later time. That may not sound terribly exciting by itself, but what if I told you that every tab you push to the TooManyTabs row frees up memory by turning the tabs you shelve into idle tabs? According to the developers, any time you move a tab onto a TooManyTabs row (which you do by hovering over the tab and clicking the yellow up arrow that replaces the favicon), that tab is removed from your memory. Any time you want it back, just click the tab in the TMT row. TooManyTabs can also restore up to 20 recently closed tabs (versus Tab Mix Plus's 10), helps you visualize your tabs by marking them in different colors, and lets you pin favorite sites to TooManyTabs for quick opening. If you're used to browsing sessions overflowing with extra tabs that devour your memory, this one is worth a try.

Documentation Localization (and Ubiquity in the Top 10)

Foxiewire feed - Wed, 11/26/2008 - 16:59

After the tour around Europe and Asia, it became very clear that even Labs projects (perhaps especially Labs projects) need to enable a global community by providing better on-ramps to participation in more languages. Everywhere I went, I heard frustration that all of our documentation (when it exists) is written only in English. That makes it hard for contributors to get up to speed on a project, and for potential contributors to find out about a project. Luckily, everywhere I went people volunteered to translate what they could, if we had the infrastructure to support them.

John Resig - Genetic A/B Testing with JavaScript

Foxiewire feed - Wed, 11/26/2008 - 16:57

A product was recently released called SnapAds which allows its users (advertisers) to permute different variations of an ad and display different versions to users, based upon how well they perform over time.

But that's not what I was interested in, specifically (even though it is a cool idea). The team that created this also created another product a while back that never saw a full release: Genetify. Genetify provides developers with a JavaScript library for doing any number of A/B tests on a site (tweaking CSS, JavaScript, or HTML elements) all trained over time using a Genetic algorithm backend.

Among the handful of new and improved features, the most notable update for Firefox users is support for inline viewing of PDFs using Foxit Reader's new Firefox plug-in. How to search Thunderbird emails with Spotlight on a MacBook

Foxiewire feed - Mon, 11/24/2008 - 23:35

After upgrading from OSX10.4 -> OSX10.5, I was surprised to discover that Spotlight was no longer indexing Thunderbird emails.

I went back and rechecked all the steps in my earlier blog post, thinking maybe some files were lost in the upgrade, but all appeared ok. Using “/usr/bin/mdimport -L" I verified that the importer was present and still running. I even tried

Netscape Link Pad is back!

Foxiewire feed - Sun, 11/23/2008 - 01:02

Netscape Link Pad had been one of my most frequently used add-ons for Firefox 2 and it was never updated for Firefox 3 so I gave up hope that it ever would be but thanks to Tim Luigjes an updated version is now available on AMO.
-
Netscape Link Pad allows you to add links to the Netscape Link Pad sidebar for temporary storage to be viewed at another time and for links that you don't want to permanently bookmark although they are only deleted if you set them to be deleted upon clicking on one or by right clicking on one and selecting delete (see the options menu).
-
To add (and manage) a link, open the Netscape Link Pad via the Netscape Link Pad toolbar button or status bar button and drag a link to it. You can also simply drag a link to the status bar button and it will be added to the Netscape Link Pad without the sidebar being opened.
