Mozilla "On the Street" Interviews

Welcome to the Mozilla "On the Street" Interviews project. We want you to get out there with a video camera and ask the really tough questions, like "Why would you ever use IE instead of Firefox?" and "What's your favorite Add-on?". The world deserves to know!

This is your chance to find out what people have to say about Firefox and get some face time on air.mozilla.com aka "Mozilla TV". Be a broadcast journalist for a day or make a short film or documentary... get creative! As a Mozilla Campus Rep it's your duty to discover the truth.

So get out there and try to get at least 5-10 minutes of video (feel free to do more if you want)...and how you do it is up to you! We'll just put together all of your highlights and broadcast them online for everyone to watch. You'll be famous. ;-)

Rewards

We will showcase your videos on air.mozilla.com and our 3 favorite submissions will be rewarded a shiny, new Flip Mino camera*! All Campus Reps that submit a qualifying video* will also be given a 2008-09 Campus Reps "yeti" t-shirt. So grab your cameras, a few publicity release forms* and parental release forms*, and hit the streets!

Our 3 favorites get a Flip Mino:
Everyone gets a t-shirt:

Submissions

We will be accepting submissions through November 30, 2008.

Once you have some good interview footage, put it on YouTube or encode your video to a compressed format (avi, mpg, divx, xvid, etc.). Send in your submission by emailing campusreps@mozilla.com and be sure to include all of the following:
  • Your name and email address
  • Where you filmed the interviews (city, campus, landmark, etc)
  • Link to your YouTube video (or attach your video file)
  • Attach a scanned copy of your signed publicity release forms and parental release forms (or you can fax them to 650.903.0875 c/o Jay Patel - Campus Reps)
  • Short paragraph about your "On the Street" experience
Any submissions that don't include all of the above will not qualify. Everyone will be contacted for their t-shirt sizes after the submission deadline on November 30. We will review all valid submissions and notify you if you have been chosen as one of our 3 favorites by December 15.

What To Do

Here's an example of what we're looking for... Rocketboom did something similar a while back and asked people if they preferred IE or Firefox... guess what most of them said? :-)

You can take the same approach as they did above or come up with your own questions. Go walk around campus, visit downtown, or try some of the tourist hotspots in your city. Any place where there is a lot of foot traffic will work great for this project. For best results, try to interview as many different types of people as possible.

TIP: Take a couple of friends with you! If you have one person to film and another to get release forms signed, you'll be able to talk to more people and can focus on looking good for the camera! :-)

Questions To Ask

Here are a few questions you might want to ask...
  1. What's Mozilla? What do you think Mozilla stands up for?
  2. Have you ever heard of open source or open standards? Why do they matter?
  3. Have you heard of Firefox?
  4. When did you first hear about Firefox? From who?
  5. Do you know who makes Firefox?
  6. Do you use Firefox?
  7. What specifically do you like about Firefox?
  8. Has Firefox improved your life?
  9. What did you use before you switched to Firefox?
  10. What made you want to switch?
  11. Have you told others to switch to Firefox?
  12. Do you use Add-ons and which are your favorites?
  13. How would you make Firefox better?
  14. Why is Firefox free?
  15. Have you seen the Firefox crop circle?
  16. How would you express your feelings about Firefox (try to capture that feeling through action)?

Rules

* You will be responsible for all federal, state, local and other applicable taxes relating to any prize awarded.
* Entry must be submitted under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License.
* Please make sure that everyone 18 and over that appears in your video has signed the publicity release form, otherwise your submission will not qualify and we will not be able to show your video. Also, if you interview a minor that is 17 or younger, a parent or guardian must fill out the parental release form. Just print a bunch out and take them with you on a clipboard... and don't forget the pen!

Hopefully that's enough to get you started. Feel free to leave a comment here if you have any ideas for other questions or need help.

Thanks!
- Jay, your Mozilla Campus Reps coordinator
