General
- What is Firefox?
- What is the purpose of this site?
- How do I join the community, and what are the benefits of joining?
- What is "sfx"? I keep seeing that term.
Firefox is the fast new web browser that's winning praise from users and the media for making the web fun and easy again. For more information, and to download Firefox, visit the Mozilla Foundation.
As a small, non-profit organization, the Mozilla Foundation has very limited resources at its disposal to market Firefox to the world. SpreadFirefox was created to fill this void, and was founded on the same principles of community involvement that drive the development and testing of Firefox. We believe there is nothing that a large community of enthusiastic volunteers can't accomplish, and this site exists to unite the community into one cohesive marketing force that even competitors with unlimited resources can't compete with. For more information, see our original announcement.
To create a SpreadFirefox ("sfx") account, click the "Create new account!" link in the box on the top right and follow the directions. Joining sfx is free.
If you're an organization with a strong web presence, the roll call is a great reason to join sfx. We've driven hundreds of thousands of hits to organizations like G4TechTV, Overclockers Club, Broadband Reports and Aquius in return for their supporting Firefox.
sfx is just our shorthand for "SpreadFirefox."
Spreading Firefox
- What kinds of things can I do to spread Firefox?
- We offer a wide variety of buttons and banners that we encourage you to use on your website. Additionally, many sfx members have created their own artwork that you are free to use.
Sfx Image Archive - If you participate regularly in a forum or bulletin board on the web, put your Firefox link or button in your signature or as your avatar.
- Include your Firefox link in your profile for your favorite instant messaging client (e.g. AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, etc.).
- Put your Firefox link in your e-mail signature
- Firefox Materials and Logos Repository!
- Use eye-catching Firefox wallpaper on your desktop.
- Help convince others to download Firefox. Rate and review us at c|net download.com, BetaNews (Windows Mac Linux) and other popular download sites that offer Firefox.
- Pass out flyers or leave a stack of them in your school's computer cluster, at the gym, at the library, or in your breakroom at work.
- Get the Firefox poster and put it on your dorm or office wall.
- Spread the Firefox stickers!
- Wear the Firefox t-shirt as often as human standards of cleanliness allow.
- Give a loved one the gift of Firefox.
- How do official sfx campaigns work?
The easiest way to spread Firefox has also proven to be one of the most effective: simply link to it. If you have joined sfx, you will receive one point each time someone clicks your special affiliate link.
Linking, however, is just a start. Our users have come up with many other novel ways to spread the word that don't require you to leave your computer.
However, the best way to spread Firefox is to spread it beyond the computer, in the "real world".
Donations are also very much appreciated and are used entirely to fund the development and promotion of Firefox. You can also join and participate in a number of different teams.
And when you've done all of those things, tell your friends about sfx so they can, too!
The community drives this site, and at any given time there are always at least a dozen ongoing marketing efforts. From time to time, the sfx team will announce official campaigns. The point of these campaigns is not to draw attention away from our members' campaigns, but to unite the community toward a challenging goal. We work hard to design exciting campaigns, and will provide tools and resources to facilitate the campaign (e.g. we often offer counters that track our progress toward the goal in real time). Campaigns will be announced on the front page by the sfx team, and the latest information will be available for the duration of the campaign in the top green box in the right sidebar.
Roll Call
- What is the Roll Call?
- How do I get featured in the Roll Call?
- How can I compete with highly trafficked websites?
- Why would I want to be in the Roll Call?
- What do the numbers in the Roll Call mean?
- Why isn't my name linked to my website in the Roll Call?
The Roll Call is a permanent box in the right sidebar of sfx that spotlights the best sfx members from day to day, as determined by their amount of points. We feature two lists of members. The "Top 5 Climbers" box displays those members who have climbed the most number of slots in the rankings over the past 7 days, while the "Top 5 Affiliates" box displays those members who earned the highest number of points in the past 7 days.
Earn more points and outperform your fellow promoters!
Some users have complained that it's impossible to get on the Roll Call when highly trafficked websites like G4TechTV are promoting Firefox. In response, we have made some changes to the roll call to even the playing field. First, we added the "Top 5 Climbers" box, which features those members who have moved up in rank (ranks are determined by point count) over the past 7 days. It's impossible for sites like G4TechTV to be featured in that box, since they're already in the top 5. If you are one of the top 250 sfx members, you can view your current rank by clicking "view top 250" at the bottom of the roll call. The second thing we did was make the "Top 5 Affiliates" list based on points accumulated over the past 7 days, instead of total points. And finally, we display and link to the member responsible for the most recent referral at the top of every sfx page.
The best part about being featured in the Roll Call, besides seeing your name in lights and earning the admiration of your peers, is that we link users to the website you specify in your account settings. Thanks to the incredible popularity of sfx, companies and individuals alike report that we send hundreds of thousands of visitors their way via the Roll Call.
The number next to each member in the "Top 5 Climbers" box is the total number of slots the member has moved up in the rankings over the past 7 days. Rankings are determined by point count. In other words, if member Joe was ranked 2056th with 10 point last week, and now he is ranked 1000th with 30 points this week, the number "1056" would be displayed next to Joe to indicate that he moved up 1056 places in the rankings.
The number next to each member in the "Top 5 Affiliates" box is the total number of points the member has earned in the last 7 days. Since points are mostly awarded for referrals at the moment, this number generally translates into number of referrals in the past week. However, that will change in the future.
We no longer link directly from the roll call due to the number of times we've had to block people attempting to game the system but members can still get to link to roll call members sites by checking out their website in their account settings.
