Should Open Source Mean Free
So, open source has become synonymous with free but is that a legal reality? No. Open source projects can charge for their services. When using the most popular open source license, the GNU/GPL license(s) you can still sell your work. Nonetheless, the work should not be encoded and future authors cannot encrypt their updates to the code.
I actually just purchased some open source software and am using it here-- http://www.nameorigin.info -- but, though I can updgrade the code, I can't turn around and encrypt it. I am not sure if I could sell my upgrades.
