Most of the downloads made in India are attributed to the US

Most of the firefox downloads done from India are attributed to the US. The reason being, almost all the Software companies in India have a leased line which connects to the US network. Even our IP addresses are mapped to that domain. So, all the FF3 downloads we do today will be accounted as downloads done in the US.
So, we have to add some 150000 to 200000 downloads from the US counter to the India counter to make the download counter correct.
Could very well be the reason for lower than expected downloads.
in India, but there is no way for us to sort out the exact numbers since we just use a standard geo-ip database to help identify where the download traffic is coming from; especially since I'm guessing most the locales selected in India will be en-US and en-GB.
We could also measure downloads of the locale versions (Punjabi and Gujarati) that are available to help us get a better sense of traffic from the region, and we need to get that Hindi and other locales shipping soon.
We will have to do some creative thinking in the future to try and sort out how to measure this effect and how big it might be.

Yes, that could very well be the reason behind the lower than expected download numbers in India, but there would really be no way for us to figure out a closer number based on this effect since we are just using geo-ip data to build the counts.

The Indian workers who use the leased US line are effectively working in the US anyhow.

Thanks for the point, that many figures are influenced. But I think at all this map is an impressing sign how countries are connected to the net in 2008. And it is a poor symbol of working together for a better world.
