Firefox 3 Usage taking off!
Posted June 22nd, 2008 by ottodv
Yesterday, Saturday 21st, 2008. Firefox 3 was already used by 22.70% of all Firefox users that visited my site (7is7.com). Here is the breakdown per major release:
| Pageviews | Visitors | |||
| Firefox 3 | 2506 | 21.18% | 1666 | 22.70% |
| Firefox 2 | 9053 | 76.51% | 5492 | 74.84% |
| Firefox 1.5 | 196 | 1.66% | 106 | 1.44% |
| Firefox 1 | 76 | 0.64% | 72 | 0.98% |
| Firefox 0 | 2 | 0.02% | 2 | 0.03% |
| 11833 | 100.00% | 7338 | 100.00% |
That's a pretty good achievement, so soon after the initial release.

On Monday October 20th,
On Monday October 20th, 2008, slightly more than 4 months since the initial release of Firefox 3, nearly 75% of all Firefox users visiting my site (7is7.com) were using Firefox 3. Based on 21561 pagevies made with Firefox, the breakdown is as follows:
Firefox 3 - 74.84%
Firefox 2 - 23.18%
Firefox 1.5 - 1.35%
Firefox 1 - 0.61%
Firefox 0 - 0.02%
That this is an incredible achievement, can be seen by comparing to the percentages of MSIE, where more than 2 years after the release of version 7, more than a third of MSIE users still use older versions. This is the breakdown of 40682 pageviews made with MSIE:
MSIE 7 - 64.50%
MSIE 6 - 35.19%
MSIE 5- - 0.31%
MSIE 7 came out around the same time as Firefox 2, so one could argue that MSIE 7 usage should be compared to the usage of Firefox 2 and 3 to make a fair comparison. Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 together are used by 98% of Firefox users.

That's Awesome
I know that you have a good amount of Firefox content on your site and it isn't the greatest percentage of the type(s) of content that you have on your site, but what are the most visited areas?
I'm curious if it is the Firefox content that it attracting so many Firefox users, or are the Firefox users visiting or drawn to other content that is not specifically Firefox content?
And do your countdown clock usage stats have any affect on your visitor totals?

Suggest upgrading?
I agree with Ken, it's very interesting data, and I'm also curious about what the Fx users are looking for on the site.
Given that there are still quite a few Firefox 1 and 2 visitors, I'm wondering if it would be possible to do an experiment: on the Firefox pages, detect the browser version and suggest somewhere on the page that they upgrade. You could then track if the ratio of the different versions changes faster.
This would be similar to Jeremy's dynamic banners: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/2883
but tracking its impact on one site would be interesting.
What do you think?
Firefox users and Upgrading
Although I do have a section of my website dedicated to Firefox, that does attract more Firefox users, the most visited parts of my site are the countdown clock and my travel stories. Which are not specifically aimed at Firefox users, although Firefox is promoted there of course.
I have been thinking about suggesting upgrades to Firefox 2 users (and other old versions), but tracking it's impact would be difficult, because it would be hard to seperate from the natural growth of Firefox 3's share, and also it is hard to say what percentage of users are return visitors.
Of course suggesting an upgrade can't hurt

firefox is best
Right; there is no perfect browser, even to this day and in the 21st
century, no less! They all have annoying problems and lack features
that they should have had long ago, if not from day one.
That said, I've found this one to be generally the most stable under
NT/2k/XP/Vista(!) and I have used all of them, moving back and forth
between them, dumping each one in turn as I have become disgusted.
This is a streamlined, *real* browser, not for those who want all of
the bells and whistles, but hopefully it will suit some of you who
are, like me, constantly irritated by the other browsers.
Firefox Usage
Last month, 56.38% of visitors out of aprox. 75,000 who visited Themebot were using Firefox. Of those users, 80.71% were using a version of Firefox 3! :D
The site is geared towards the more savvy internet user, but it is very pleasing to see those statistics. The monthly percentage of Firefox users is almost always over 50%.
