Community @ SFx
This is the place to discuss freely all things concerning Firefox. Talk about anything* you like as long as it has some relation to promoting Firefox, Mozilla or Thunderbird.
* If there is a group focusing on the topic you want to discuss then it's better to go there.
I want to know something
Posted May 5th, 2008 by NickyWill someone explain to me why all the effort to spread Firefox? I don't get it. Internet Explorer is a good browser even though Firefox is better, but it's not useless. And it's way ahead in market share, do we think we're going to topple the giant? IE is free, so that's not the angle. There's money in this for Mozilla somewhere, I know it. But why so much effort to kill the giant when it works?

Posted March 15th, 2008 by ottodvKevin Rose (one of the founders of Digg.com) was caught on camera wearing a Firefox T-shirt. For some reason that's the first thing that caught my eye ;-)
Firefox Market Share over 30%
Posted March 6th, 2008 by ottodvThe following text is a copy of: Firefox Market Share over 30%.
I HAVE HAD ENOUGH
Posted March 5th, 2008 by stormbringerI wanted to be a part of the SFX community. But I'm tired of posts being lost, destroyed, pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed and deleted. The browser "hangs" and I get error messages. But it's posted. Surprise! It's gone again!
Bug report
Posted March 4th, 2008 by stormbringerStill having problems posting. I'll write up something and hit the button to send it. The response is, "Problem loading page". The last time, with the humorous picture, I hit "submit" once. It was posted twice. Just so you know.

Mozilla Messaging Starts up Operations
Posted February 19th, 2008 bySource: mozilla.com/en-US/press
New open source organization kicks off development of Thunderbird 3
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. - February 19, 2008 - Mozilla Messaging, the new mail focused subsidiary of the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, today announced that it has begun operations.
Missing Material
Posted February 17th, 2008 by stormbringerI subscribe to the postings by e-mail. One arrived about "Where are all the groups"? Yes, I see fifteen groups as well.
But I'd like to know why so many posts do not show up. I could not reply to the original ("access denied"), and the topic itself seems to be gone. I have posted items myself that have disappeared.
This is discouraging.
Whatever happened to all the groups?
Posted February 16th, 2008 by ottodvWhatever happened to all the groups? There are only a few left. For example I can't find the AccessFirefox group anymore and the Fire up the Fox group I created sometime ago is no longer accessible, even when logged in.

Firefox Download Counters
Posted February 12th, 2008 by MichaelBuckleyI have made a few download counters that I have put on http://codefisher.org/firefox/
It comes in 3 formats. A button image in one of 6 colors that has the Firefox logo on it. As as image with just the the number that can be made in any color or font. Or as a JavaScript counter that ticks along to make it appear that the downloads are really happening.
Firefoxload - Downloads Firefox for Seeding P2P Servers
Posted February 11th, 2008 by OldRabbitA Perl script to download the Firefox (or Thunderbird) executable for each locale, check the md5 sum, then rename according to the locale so that all the executables for the different locales can be hosted in a common directory on a P2P seeding server etc..
Firefox, IE Vie for Popularity Among College Students
Posted February 10th, 2008 byTo better understand the views, attitudes, and usage of various technologies and brands among college students, Eduventures conducted research of 18- to 24-year-old students enrolled full-time at a four-year college or university via a Web survey.
Valuable Consumer Research
Posted February 8th, 2008 byI believe that what I have is a decent view of the moods and feelings that average end users feel towards Firefox when they come across an Internet related technical problem.
Raise Funds for a Good Cause
Posted February 6th, 2008 by mathew.chackoChoose Firefox Special Edition (for UNICEF, UNAIDS, Global Fund, etc.) and Mozilla foundation gives a portion of the generated money for good cause.
What need to be done?
* Make Good Cause Firefox (Special Edition theme)
* Make web pages for good cause
* Make Good cause downloadable button
Is this idea an interesting one?
Firefox Red Panda plushies are back!!!!!
Posted February 5th, 2008 by JustZisGuyI just noticed this, Firefox plushies are back in the Mozilla Store!

Thunderbird Buttons
Posted February 3rd, 2008 by ottodvIt's been pointed out a few times that we need more Thunderbird buttons (there's only one available on the buttons and banners page at this moment). However there have been more, so I took some time to find them and put them together in a page, with an easy copy and paste interface.
More Blatant Promotion
Posted February 2nd, 2008 by stormbringerA *very* short Weblog entry for 2 February 2008. This one is a little bit of text and two pictures, all about the Fox. http://stormbringer005.blogspot.com
This Really Grinds My Gears
Posted February 1st, 2008 by stormbringerUnited Healthcare, a major insurance company in the US (and other international ventures), forbids Firefox, even as optional use. Worse, they're not bright enough to get IE7 working with their applications, it has to be IE6. In their buildings, fine, I guess, it's their equipment.

Change Request: Sort Groups by number of subscribers
Posted January 23rd, 2008 by ottodvThere are so many groups now, that the overview is lost.
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/og
I think we should list the groups by number of subscribers, so that the most popular ones appear on top, instead of hidden somewhere in pile.
A dying project?
Posted January 20th, 2008 by FuzzyFoxIs Firemonger coming to its end? It has always been so useful but recently it has fallen behind on its releases and is now way back on ff 2.0.0.1! But is it still a good idea?
E-Mail Domain
Posted January 20th, 2008 by stormbringerI'd like to see a free Webmail domain set up for Firefox. Many special interest groups have them with their Websites. ItalianPride.com, several Free Tibet groups, Buddhamail (yes, really) and more. These come through Everyone.net. Advertising supported at the free level, and the opportunity to upgrade to more storage, POP3 access, etc.
I did it again - post disappeared from group homepage.
Posted January 18th, 2008 by ottodvMy previous post to this group disappeared from the home page of this group, because after it was posted I had to correct something and edited it. I should have known this because it happened to me before here on SFx, but forgot about it, because this is never a problem anywhere on any forum!
I Am Personally Boycotting Foxkeh
Posted January 13th, 2008 by stormbringerWhy would I do a thing like that? Because the Foxkeh monthly wallpapers are supporting the Beijing Olympics. Because of the ChiComs' record of abysmal human rights and their occupation of Tibet, I can no longer support this aspect of Mozilla's campaign.
About those pictures...
Posted January 11th, 2008 by stormbringerI've read where it's suggested that we do Firefox stuff with the logo, take a picture and send it in to share. How? I found something on the old site, but that's being eliminated. Plus, I'm not sure I put it in the right place. Also, my Flickr posting on my account does not show up in the column on the right at Spreadfirefox.com.
What am I missing here? Instruction would be appreciated.

What's this doing on SFx?
Posted January 5th, 2008 by ottodvIn continuation of JustZisGuy's post, what are these items doing on SFx:
Ziggy Marley releases live DVD
Replicating fixed position in Internet Explorer
MP3 Music Awards deemed a success
Pro IE items
Posted January 4th, 2008 by ottodvI read the post by JustZisGuy http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/625 but I can't reply to his post, so restarting a disussion. I also feel those items to be inappropriate on this site as would be anything that is not related to Firefox.
Losing Valuable SFx Content
Posted January 4th, 2008 byI saw a post by Otto de Voogd mentioning dead links to the SFx archive site. I too am now discovering that I have many dead links pointing to SFx content that no longer exists. Why is Mozilla deleting the content at all? It's history, reference, and materials that took some quite a bit of time compile and there are quite a few sites that link to SFx articles and content.
Firefox Mini
Posted January 4th, 2008 by Syed KazimIn my cellphone, I have Opera Mini, for more information, go to this site http://www.operamini.com/ , I was using it, and this thought came into my mind, is there a Firefox Mini?
So I searched the net, and came across Minimo (Mini Mozilla), on this page http://news.softpedia.com/news/FireFox-isn-039-t-enough-Mini-Mozilla-tak... , it says:
In the news...
Posted January 4th, 2008 by SawyerLately there is some brewing news up on Google news w/ Firefox, and itself:
Firefox ,or Mozilla, has been in talk around the Market about NYSE messages. How Big Mozilla could be in the public markets and how much WORTH could the Company be.
Facing the critics
Posted January 2nd, 2008 by stormbringerLike any good religion, Firefox supporters need to be able to answer their critics. Sites like the one I just stumbled across make me wonder, "Why am I spreading Firefox, anyway?" Are there good responses to the issues raised here? http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/FirefoxMyths.html
Disabling documents impossible
Posted January 2nd, 2008 by ottodvI have disabled documents in the Community @ SFx forum, but people can still post documents. This must be some bug. I'd ask people to use the "Start a discussion" link rather than the "create document" link. With a document no-one can post a reply, which kind of defeats the purpose of our group.

Public Services in Brazil are adopting Firefox natural and gradually
Posted January 2nd, 2008 by sergio_brAt this exact moment, I am at a Public Internet access terminal in Sao Paulo - Brazil.
Although I have a computer at home, when I am away, it is interesting to access internet for free. This is a Sao Paulo government project to make internet accessible to all citizens. The system installed here is Linux, and Firefox is offered as one important option of browsers.
Low-Key Efforts
Posted January 1st, 2008 by stormbringerI made a project for myself. Took the current download of FFX, wrote a document on why people should use it, some other stuff, and burned it onto CDs. Whenever I sell something on eBay, or bring it up in conversation, I'm ready to pass along a free bonus. I won't get "points" for it, but then, those points don't count for anything, anyway. Anyone else have creative ideas for offering FFX?
Brazilian Government Bank recommends Firefox to clients as a secure option
Posted January 1st, 2008 by sergio_brSome time ago I started sending messages to the I.T. staff of the Brazilian Government Bank called "Caixa Economica Federal" because their website was not compatible with Firefox. There was a virtual keyboard that could be moved (dragged) only with IE browser, because of a non-standard javascript. I suggested them even code to solve the problem, as I am programmer.
Firefox Live Support
Posted December 30th, 2007 by ottodvFrom: Live Support Launched today
Today we are officially opening our Live Chat support to users of Firefox. Users who can’t find their answer in the knowledge base or the forum can now get real time help troubleshooting their issues with more skilled Firefox users.
The End of Netscape
Posted December 29th, 2007 by ottodvIt doesn't seem anyone posted this yet on SFx: AOL has announced that it will discontinue development and support of Netscape and advises all Netscape users to switch to Firefox.
Create discussion rather than a document or event
Posted December 29th, 2007 by ottodvAnother tip, better create a discussion rather than a document, since no one can reply/react on a document. Maybe we should disable documents for this group? Opinions on that? Maybe there's a point to documents but for now it looks just like a discussion entry without the possibility to react.
FFX Evangelism re-post
Posted December 29th, 2007 by stormbringerSince it was pointed out that edited posts wind up disappearing, I am putting this item up again. It's about presenting our views on why Firefox is a better browser, and suggestions on how to present our case. Also, some observations on how things can be/are done wrong.
Editing a discussion topic removes it from group homepage
Posted December 29th, 2007 by ottodvI noticed another annoying bug, when you edit a discussion topic, that topic disappears from the group home page. I have seen it happen twice now. Once I re-created the topic to get it back.
So until this is fixed try not to edit a discussion topic but rather post a reply with your correction.
Old pages and the links we lost!
Posted December 28th, 2007 by ottodvThis is something that really bugs me, we have many years of content created on the old SFx. For example some time ago we ran a contest and most of the stuff about the contest was posted on SFx. So I have a page on my site where the first 3 links are to those pages on SFx, but all three links are now dead.
This is a great Group
Posted December 27th, 2007 byThanks for creating this group. We should consider making it an automatic subscribe when you create a new account at Spread Firefox. What do you think?
