Firefox Technology Evangelism
There apparently is still a need to encourage sites to develop and update their sites to be fully compatible with Firefox (and ideally, web standards in general)
Years ago there was a major problem with web sites not working right in Mozilla browsers. The only reason many were fixed was because "Netscape" was still recognized as influential and they began using the Gecko rendering engine with Netscape 6.x.
While the situation is much better now, there is still much room for improvement. 99.9% of the sites out there may work perfectly in Firefox and that may be good enough for you or me, but the first thing a regular user does when they encounter a site that "only supports IE" is put down Firefox and pick up IE.
From reports such as this: http://robert.accettura.com/archives/2008/01/05/barclays-blocks-firefox/ it looks like some sites still need to be convinced to develop or update for Firefox.
Resources:
Mozillazine Web Development / Standards Evangelism
This forum used to be for discussing sites like this, but has since evolved in to a forum for assisting developers coding sites to help them get the sites to work in Firefox. So if the site is YOUR site and you need help then head over there.
Bugzilla Tech Evangelism
This is sometimes kept track of in Bugzilla as "Tech Evangelism", but not much seems to be going on there these days.
Mozilla Site Reporter
Here, you can see sites users are complaining about using the Bad Site Reporter extension included with Firefox.
They are still submitting many sites that have problems in Firefox or downright block it, but these days you have to wade through spam and irrelevant submissions (like "It says 404 not found now but it worked last week!", which is not a Mozilla problem)
The Mozilla Technology Evangelism home page
Mozilla's home page for Tech Evangelism, but all they really suggest for joining the effort is to complain and report the page with the reporter app. They have a detailed contact procedure, instructions for filing evangelism reports in Bugzilla, and even letter templates.
Sites that Make Firefox Sad
And if you don't believe all of this is still a problem, then please see this page for just a small list of some of the sites out there.
Discuss:
- Sites that don't work 100% in Firefox, don't give the same functionality to Firefox, or even still block Firefox.
- How to contact the site owners and any results
- Other ways to encourage people to make their sites work with Firefox.
- Ways to encourage Firefox users to complain about such sites they encounter.
