Social Media

Mozilla has always spread first and foremost by word-of-mouth. As more and more social networking venues and tools appear, there are more potential ways to spread the word. As the launch of Firefox 3 showed, the power of word-of-mouth through a wide variety of communications channels helped start a record-breaking level of participation.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you leverage social media to market Mozilla and Firefox in your region and beyond.

Twitter

Twitter 101

Twitter 101 was put together as a resource for businesses to get the most out of having friendly, public conversations.  Since most of your tweets will surround the Mozilla and Firefox brand some of this information may be useful to you!

Best Practices

  • CoTweet is a free platform that lets multiple people easily access the same twitter account.  Key features include multiple accounts and users, assignments, scheduling tweets, on duty notifications and monitoring keywords and trends.
  • Bit.ly is a tool that allows you to shorten, share and track links.
  • Keeping Twitter updates short enough to retweet is important - use the Retweetulator to calculate the number of character you need to be "retweet friendly".

Twitter Content

Looking for content for your Twitter account?  We've compiled a great list of Tips & Tricks that you are free to re-use, localize and mix-up!  Also mozilla.status.net is a great public timeline of retweetable content.

Facebook and other Social Networks

Best Practices

  • Spend some time filling in details and uploading photos.  You want to make sure your community fan page has a friendly face!
  • Make sure to keep your page dynamic!  Changing content with new items is a great way to keep people engaged.
  • Keep updates to a maximum of 2-3 times/week.  You will want to spread out these updates with a minimum of 24 hours unless absolutely necessary.  Unlike Twitter, Facebook users are not looking for constant updates but rather quality over quantity.
  • Take time to review feedback and responses.  You want to make sure this is a bi-directional communication channel and not just pushing out information to your readers.

Profile Images

Having a visually appealing profile image on Facebook is important - it's one of the first piece someone will see.  We have created a profile images to use. You can either download each of these separately or grab all five in a zip file.
